Learn me about these fancy Toyota things! Specifically 93 ES300

But why? is your dealer expanding into beige?

Not for me. Someone else needs a decent cheap car and a coworker happens to have one of these.

90's wheels are the best, right!?

All I know is, the car in the pic is definitely not a ‘93!!

Ah. Well I can tell you from a smog tech’s perspective to look for problems with the EGR. I believe the 93 had EGR, and the issues usually stem from the vacuum control side; the valve is usually fine, and the EGR line rarely gets clogged.
Other than that they usually pass smog without an issue.

Shows what I know!

Freshly rebuilt engine so probably fine. I’ll ask if it was checked or replaced.

All I know is that they’ve aged well. I don’t know if they have some type of superior paint, or the owners just love them so much they take excellent care of them.

Pretty sure that’s a Lambo ...

A smog check would verify it. But who needs those.

If cared for, pretty bulletproof ... had an ‘88 Camry wagon 5M (earlier, of course) but similar mechanicals, and dead reliable.

I owned a ‘93 ES300 for a little over a year ‘06-07. What do you need to know?

They were extremely well built, which helped. But, flawless reliability and top notch quality also help endear the car to the owner enough to encourage good upkeep.

They definitely have.

It’s coming into the shop so I’ll be looking it over. I can do all that. But it’d be nice to know if it’s been taken care of already.

Crap. I knew I needed to get my eyes checked but I didn’t realize they were that bad!

Common problems? What to look out for?

Hydraulic system is the big one. These use a hydraulic fan (same as the V6 Camry of the era) so if you get a power steering leak they can overheat. I would get the whole front end inspected for evidence of leaks and condition of the rack and hoses. I ended up having the whole steering rack replaced to solve an intermittent problem with overheating when stationary. Head gaskets are a secondary issue and may be related to running hot when the fan isn’t working right. Shortly after I fixed the rack and one head gasket showed signs of going I sold the car. The gauge cluster needle electroluminescent lights will die. The needles themselves are black and the gauges are black so you basically need the lights. Lexus dealers will want to replace whole cluster and it isn’t cheap. These needles were used on a lot of Lexus models of the era so aftermarket and DIY LED replacements are available. I’d look to see if they’ve either been replaced with OEM within the last couple years or converted and negotiate as needed. Other than that they are really solid. The interiors hold up really well and due to Toyota stubbornly not changing their dashboard font for so long many of the switches look like they could be from a new model. They ride and drive nicely and that doesn’t seem to degrade with age. One odd thing to pay attention to is that the door switch that turns off the headlights when they are left in the on position can stick and I got a dead battery as a result once or twice. I can’t say anything about the auto trans as mine was one of the rare 5-speed manuals.

Extremely helpful thanks! This one has had the engine freshly rebuilt so heads should be good to go. I’ll look into and ask about the other stuff.

You’re welcome. Yeah that rebuilt V6 should last another 200k as long as it keeps cool. Just check on the rack and fan and associated hoses.

This is the 1993 generation. One of the first mainstream cars to use projector beam headlamps. Later generations were more angular in design

I can’t really tell the difference honestly

There was one on my local CL that had almost 300k and looked brand new. Original owner, always garaged. It must have sold because I can’t find it.
